But, should Woodward succeed, United’s squad will certainly be one of the strongest in the division.8 But how on Earth would potential new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer be able to squeeze all of United’s superstars into a matchday squad, let alone a starting XI?Below are some potential ways the Red Devils could line up next season with their reported transfer targets.

AN HOMAGE TO THE FERGUSON YEARS (4-4-2)

THE MODERN-DAY MASTERPIECE (3-4-1-2)

8Teams such as Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea (when managed by Antonio Conte) have used variations of the formation above to devastating effect in recent Premier League seasons.The secret to success here is pushing the wing-backs high up the pitch to effectively create an overload in between the lines of the opposition.The holding midfielders can drop wide to cover them if caught upfield, but three no-nonsense centre-halves also provide formidable cover.England also played in a similar style at the World Cup, with Jordan Henderson the midfield linchpin. With all due respect to the Liverpool skipper, Rakitic has a far greater skillset on the ball and his passing range is superior – making him the playmaker of this team.

The former is amongst the best centre-halves in the world, and if we could acquire him and sit him in there alongside Victor Lindelof, that would be pretty special.
