Where La Liga title chasers Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla and Real Madrid must strengthen in the January transfer window
With three points between first and second, five between top and third, and fourth place Real Madrids game in hand giving them the opportunity to cut the distance with Bara to a not insurmountable five, its going to be a nail-biting race for the La Liga title in the coming months. All four of the hopefuls have problem areas in their squads though, and with the margins so fine, that could make a difference. Heres where they need to strengthen…How La Liga’s top four looks ahead of the winter break6
How La Liga’s top four looks ahead of the winter break

FC BARCELONA

The defending champions are already well aware that this years Spanish title isnt going to be easily won, having lost twice, including a rare home defeat to Real Betis, as well as dropping points in four further games. Defensive problems were a particular issue in the first third of their campaign, and can in part be explained by the absence of key centre-back Samuel Umtiti due to persistent knee issues. An inability to rely on the Frenchman coupled with recurring injuries to Thomas Vermaelen have left Bara threadbare at the back: Ivan Rakitic even had to fill in at centre-back for 30 minutes of their trip to Levante. Sensing the impending danger ahead, the Catalans acted swiftly, securing a loan deal for Valencias Jeison Murillo before the winter window had even opened.Murillo has barely kicked a ball this season and wasnt exactly a glamour signing, but Barcelona feel his pace and ability on the ball should fit the requirements at the Camp Nou. Their biggest problem position is now covered, but a less discussed issue is at centre-forward: 31-year-old Luis Surez remains a vital player for Bara, and the drop off from him to back-up striker Munir is huge.Luis Suarez has scored 11 goals in 16 league matches this season6
Luis Suarez has scored 11 goals in 16 league matches this season
Even if they could do with some more quality there, its unlikely Bara will bring in an extra striker in winter though, so they had best hope the Uruguayans long-term knee niggle doesnt flare up for the sake of their trophy hopes.

ATLETICO MADRID

Atltico did some impressive business in the summer, adding the likes of World Cup winner Thomas Lemar and last years outstanding Spanish midfielder Rodri to their squad. Both have made significant contributions to their excellent league season so far, where the Madrid side have only lost once and are undefeated since early September.Adding back-up for Diego Costa was also a necessity, and Atletis business there was less impressive. Bringing in Niko Kalinic, who only managed six goals in Serie A last season, was slightly underwhelming. With Costa now injured, the Croatian has stepped in to score two goals in his last three league games, but it remains to be seen whether he can sustain the kind of scoring rate necessary to keep the Colchoneros biting at Baras heels.Diego Costa has just one league goal for Atletico Madrid this season6
Diego Costa has just one league goal for Atletico Madrid this season
Doubts over Kalinic combined with a persistent sensation that Costa may be on a downward trajectory mean Diego Simeone could do with another striker. A salary cap holding an iron grip on the Colchoneros however means they wont sign unless someone goes in the other direction. Depending on the outcome of Bayerns push for Lucas Hernndez that could yet happen, but losing a huge player from an already stretched defensive line would open up a need for further reinforcement in other areas of the pitch.

SEVILLA

Given an injection of attacking intent and tactical sophistication by new coach Pablo Machin, Sevilla have been one of the surprise packages of the season, turning over Real Madrid in a thrilling 3-0 win in September then keeping within touching distance of the other big boys Bara and Atleti. Even if they still lead Madrid in the table, Sevilla remain the outsiders of the top four to stay in the title race, and have the biggest talent gap to close of all the hopefuls.Sevilla have been the league’s surprise package under Pablo Machin6
Sevilla have been the league’s surprise package under Pablo Machin
The financially immaculate Andalucians have some money to spend though, and boss Machin expects winter signings from sporting director Joaquin Caparros, sensing the unique opportunity offered up by an unusually even La Liga season. In a dream scenario the coach would love to reunite with old pupil and Girona forward Portu, who Sevilla pushed hard to bring to the Ramn Snchez-Pizjun in the summer. Girona will try to hold their nerve once more however, so it wouldnt be a surprise if Caparros has to turn elsewhere.Machins desire to go fishing at his old club doesnt end there. Girona centre-back Juanpe was another summer target, and according to Girona-based journalist Gerard Bellera, Sevilla will make a new offer in the forthcoming winter window. The 27-year-old has been excellent this season and knows the system the coach uses like the back of his hand. There is one reunion that looks more likely than any other. The Sevilla media is currently in overdrive about the possibility of Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno returning to the club, and as an academy graduate who would slot into the left wing-back position that Machin is keen to cover, he fits the bill well.Alberto Moreno recently criticised Jurgen Klopp and looks set for the exit at Liverpool6
Alberto Moreno recently criticised Jurgen Klopp and looks set for the exit at Liverpool
Estadio Deportivo reports that Moreno rejected a contract extension at Anfield because he wants to return to Sevilla, where he recently bought a new house, and with only six months left on his Liverpool deal the fee to sign him in January would be well within the La Liga sides means.

REAL MADRID

Real Madrids shaky start to the league season has already cost one coach his job, and Julen Lopeteguis replacement Santiago Solari found out through an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Eibar that the problems in their squad still run deep. The impending changing of the guard at the Santiago Bernabu cant be fixed in a January transfer window, but some marginal improvements can at least be made, and Madrid are expected to sign. The principle target is Manchester City youngster Brahim Daz, who has been all over the front pages of Marca for several weeks now, where it is claimed that the final details of a deal to bring him to the Spanish capital are being hammered out. Brahim would add some much-needed energy and creativity to a forward line that has struggled for consistency and goals, most obviously in the wide positions.Brahim Diaz is set for return to his homeland to join Real6
Brahim Diaz is set for return to his homeland to join Real
As a general rule Madrid are reluctant to do bring players in during the winter window, so adding Brahim alone would be significant, but the exceptional nature of their circumstances mean a further surprise isnt out of question. The other most likely arrival is River Plate midfielder Exequiel Palacios, who Los Blancos clearly like, judging by the series of leaks to the local media about their interest in him during recent weeks. Fresh off a Copa Libertadores win at the Bernabu, the sharp-minded midfielder with a good eye for a cutting pass would provide useful relief for both Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, who have had an inconsistent season.

However, Liverpool could console themselves if they were to win the Champions League for a sixth time when they face Spurs in Madrid on June 1.In one of the greatest comebacks in the competitions history, Liverpool came from 3-0 down to beat La Liga champions Barcelona 4-0, while Lucas Moura scored a sensational hat-trick as Spurs stunned Ajax 3-2. It will be the first English final since 2008, when Manchester United beat Chelsea and Milner is hopeful Liverpool will end the season with silverware.“When you think of 30 wins out of 38, at the start of the season you’d like to think that’s good enough,” Milner told Liverpool’s website.“But obviously that shows how good Man City are as well. Unfortunately it’s just short, but obviously what we did earlier in the week [versus Barcelona] gives us a chance to go and redeem ourselves and get a piece of silverware because I think everyone deserves a bit of silverware.”“I think the team especially, these boys, how they grind out results. He added: “The fans have been unbelievable all year, they’ve lifted us when we’ve needed them, they’ve stuck with us when it’s been tough in games and like I say, the boys deserve a bit of silverware, but the fans do too.”

James Milner has 'redemption' on his mind as Liverpool look ahead to the Champions League final. Following the end of a colossal bid for the Premier League title, the Reds' sights can now be trained on the task of overcoming Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.

Leeds United fan who got ‘England World Cup winners’ tattoo gets ‘Championship play-off winners’ ink
Acting on impulse is not always the wisest thing to do and this Leeds United supporter is proof. So certain was Jamie Richardson that his beloved Leeds would get promoted to the Premier League, he got a tattoo saying ‘Leeds: 2019 Championship play-off winners’ before their first leg against Derby. And it looked as if his faith would pay off, with Leeds winning the first match 1-0 and then going further ahead in the tie on Wednesday night at Elland Road. However, Derby produced a stunning comeback to win 4-2 and go through to Wembley, where they will play Aston Villa in the Championship Play-Off final.Hasty Jamie was not only left with egg on his face, but a tattoo to constantly remind him of his wrong prediction. In an interview with BBC Yorskhire, he said: “My name’s Jamie, I’m that confident Leeds are getting promoted I’ve been and had this done.“I just felt like the team needed a bit of a boost. The fans needed a little bit of a boost. So I went and got that tattoo done.”It is not the first mistake, the Leeds fan has made.Last summer, Jamie, like the rest of the nation, was caught up in the excitement of the World Cup, as England reached the semi-final in Russia, but again, he was some way off with his judgement, putting the World Cup and ‘England 2018 World Cup winners’ on his stomach. The Leeds players were inconsolable after Play-Off semi-final defeatgetty1

“It’s not the first one, no,” he continued. “This time last year I went and got a ‘England World Cup winners’ tattoo done.“It’s still getting me drinks today that one.”Of course, these days a regretful tattoo can be removed using laser treatment, but it would seem Jamie is not really fussed.“To be honest, I’m not too fussed people’s reactions,” he said. “It’s a bit of fun, if you’re a Leeds United fan, we’re all Leeds aren’t we. We’re all going up together.”He concluded: “Next year it’ll say ‘Leeds United: Premier League champions. This time next year you’ll see.”

Bruno Fernandes factfile

Name:Bruno Miguel Borges FernandesBorn: September 8, 1994 in Maia, PortugalInternational: 11 caps, one goalCareer highlight: In 2017/18 Fernandes was named the Primeira Liga’s Player of the Year and was named in the Europa League’s squad of the season.

What clubs has he played for?

Bruno Fernandes started off with Portuguese side Boavista but did not play any first-team games for them.He joined Serie B side Novara in 2012, making 23 appearances in his first season before Udinese signed him on a co-ownership deal and nurtured his talents for three seasons, where he scored 11 goals in 95 games.A season at Sampdoria followed before an 7million transfer to Sporting before the 2017/18 season. He enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last term, bagging 31 goals in 50 appearances for the Portuguese giants.Bruno Fernandes is currently at Sporting Lisbon3
Bruno Fernandes is currently at Sporting Lisbon

What is his style of play?

Fernandes is a central midfielder who has been compared to Real Madrids Toni Kroos. He likes to play further up the pitch to create chances for his attackers, playing through balls and shooting from distance.Ex-United boss Jose Mourinho recently admitted hes been ‘surprised’ by the superb performances of his compatriot in recent months.“I was surprised by the season of Bruno, he told Eleven Sports. “It was easy to predict quality, he is a very good player, but scored a very high number of goals for a midfield player. “It shows that you need to have instinct and qualities to score and he has it all.“He strikes the ball well, heads well, cool when he is one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He finds space in the penalty area. Its all there.”

International career

Fernandes did not receive his first call up until in 2017 but was in Portugals World Cup squad and has 11 caps for his country, scoring once.

Who are interested in him?

United have been keeping tabs on him in recent weeks and head up a list of English big guns in the hunt for his signature.Fernandes played for Portugal at the 2018 World Cup3

Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton have all been linked with his talents. However, it has been suggested recently that the Red Devils are frontrunners for him and may even submit a bid in the region of 62m this summer. The transfer tussle over Fernandes is likely to intensify once his involvement at the Nations League is done.
